A farthing is defined as a fourth, a fractional part, quadrant or quartern, often associated with coins. This exciting and unconventional quilt project draws on that concept to create unique art quilts that are exceptionally appealing.

The process involves enlisting four adventurous quilters who are committed to completing the project, are willing to think outside the box, and want to have some creative fun as a group. The objective is to have the opportunity to try several new techniques on a small scale, to learn from that process, and to share and learn from the efforts of the others in the group.

Each quilter selects a different large poster or art print, divides that print into farthings, then distributes it to each of the other members of the group. Boundaries and guidelines are established, then the fun begins. Each month the artists complete the farthing of one other member of the group, then meets to see the progress, compare notes, learn from the process, and gain inspiration for the next section. In the end, you get back the four pieces for your poster and you have a unique work of art that is guaranteed to be interesting.
